Police arrested a man for allegedly stealing Rs 55,000 from a donation box at a gurdwara in Pushp Vihar, said officers. The 23-year-old accused — identified as Rohit Kumar (23), a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah — worked as a security guard at the gurdwara till December 2023, said police.

The incident came to light on April 2, when several gurdwara officials raised an alarm about some money that had gone missing from the donation box, and informed police. A team of police officers reached the spot and analysed CCTV footage; that is when the gurdwara officials identified the former security guard in the video.

Police launched a hunt to nab Kumar, and traced him to Dakshinpuri and later arrested him. The police team raided Kumar’s house and seized a motorcycle, Rs 9,000 in cash, and a duplicate key of the donation box.

Kumar revealed during interrogation that he had made a duplicate of the donation box’s key during his employment at the gurdwara, between April and December 2023. He had allegedly stolen an amount between Rs 30,000 and 50,000 two to three times, each. The last time, he allegedly stole Rs 55,000 and paid Rs 35,000 as a down payment for his motorcycle.

An FIR under Indian Penal Code Section 380 (theft) has been registered against Kumar, said police.
