The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has claimed that jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s health condition has deteriorated and he has lost 4.5 kg in the last 12 days. The Tihar Jail administration — where the CM is lodged — however, claimed that his weight has been constant since his judicial custody started.
Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy case. He was then sent to judicial custody for 15 days on April 1.
Addressing a press conference, cabinet minister and senior party leader Atishi accused the BJP and ED of putting the CM’s health at risk by sending him to jail. “Ever since he was arrested by the BJP-led central government, there has been a serious threat to his health. When he was in ED custody, his sugar level dropped thrice… once it went down to 46, which could be life-threatening… He lost 4.5 kg in the past 12 days. Being a diabetic patient, losing so much weight in such a short time can lead to severe complications,” she said.
She also said that the party would seek legal help from the court.
The Tihar Jail administration, however, said in a court statement: “On arrival on April 1, Arvind Kejriwal was examined by two doctors and all (his) vitals were normal. Also, his weight has been constant at 65 kg since he arrived in jail and to date… Home-cooked food is being provided as per the court order.” It also said his vital statistics are normal.
As per official records shared by the jail, Kejriwal’s weight was 65, sugar level 139 (random blood sugar), and blood pressure (BP) was recorded 120/82 on April 1. The weight remained at 65 kg, sugar level increased to 182 (RBS), and BP stood at 121/83 on April 2. On Wednesday, too, his weight was recorded at 65 kg, sugar level at 140 (RBS) and BP was 116/82.
AAP says CM’s health poor
Meanwhile, Atishi further said that despite his health condition, Kejriwal never allowed it to hinder his work for the public and serving the country. She added: “The entire country is watching you (BJP). If anything happens to the health of CM in custody, the country will not forgive you, even God will not forgive you…”
Hitting back, BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor called it “melodrama”. “It is surprising that Kejriwal appeared in the best of health on every court appearance… despite objections by the court, (he) gave a long statement in the courtroom. But once in jail, within a day, the AAP (chief) is claiming loss of weight and sugar level issues. All these health claims are nothing but melodrama to remain in the news to create sympathy.”
