On the 50th day of their agitation at Shambhu and Khanauri borders of Punjab and Haryana, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and SKM non-political announced another agitation to get five farmers, who were arrested during the Delhi chalo protests, released from jails.

While Amarjeet Singh and Ravinder Singh were both arrested on February 13, the first day of the protest, and are in Jind jail, Anish Khatkar was picked up on March 19 and is also in Jing jail. Two others – Navdeep Jalbera and Gurkirat Singh – were arrested on March 28 and are still in police custody. All were booked under Section 307 of IPC by the Ambala police while agitating at the borders.

Tejveer Singh, spokesperson of BKU Shaheed Bhagat Singh, said that while Navdeep and Gurkirat are from Jalbera and Behgal Patti villages of Ambala, respectively, two others are from Khatkar Kalan in Punjab and Anish is from Haryana.

The new protest call comes on Tuesday when members of KMM and SKM non-political, the two farmer bodies that had spearheaded the ‘Delhi Chalo’ call, gathered at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh, to discuss the issue.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, coordinator of SKM non-political, said that it is an irony that five youngsters, all below 30 years, were booked just because they wanted to go to Delhi to raise their demands.

Festive offer

KKM coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher added, “We demand their release or we will intensify our protest and start burning effigies of BJP in all districts on April 7. We will also take out massive processions if we get no response by then. We will also block railway tracks at Shambhu border on April 9 and gradually increase the number of protests on railway tracks.”

Meanwhile, a massive rally was organised by BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner ) in Mansa district outside the deputy commissioner and SSP offices in which they announced not to let BJP leaders enter their villages. “They didn’t let farmers go to Delhi and now we will not let them enter our villages,” said Manjit Singh Dhaner, president of BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner).

They also protested against a government bid to acquire agriculture land in Kullerian village being tilled by farmers for years but farmers don’t have ownership rights of the land. “Such cases are there in several villages of Punjab. We will not allow acquisition of the land and sarpanch Rajbir Singh who had allegedly attacked our farmer Seeta Ram weeks ago has finally been booked under Section 307 which is a victory of our struggle. However, our dharna will continue in Budhlada till all our demands are met,” said Narain Dutt, of Punjab Inqlaab Manch.
